Brief summary of research over the last five years

The common theme of my research activities over the last years has been the development of design methodologies and proof of concepts of low-power analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits for wearable, injectable and implantable biomedical devices and RF and UWB communications. Under this theme various specific projects have been or are still being carried out under my direct supervision and leadership. For my contributions to integrated circuits for medical devices and wireless communications, I have been awarded the IEEE Fellow grade, effective January 1, 2011.

From a thematic perspective, my group aims to provide the technology for the successful monitoring, diagnosis and treatment of cortical, neural, cardiac and muscular disorders by means of electroceuticals, also known as bioelectronic medicine. To this end, we work on bio-inspired electronics, biosignal conditioning / detection, neuroprosthetics, transcutaneous wireless power transfer and communication, power management and energy harvesting.

Apart from these projects, I have done a lot of work on broadband, low-voltage and ultra low-power circuit techniques in general.

  • Oorsuizen kan ondraaglijk zijn. Maar dankzij nieuwe behandelingen gloort er hoop. Alleen al in Nederland hebben naar schatting drie miljoen mensen last van tinnitus. Wetenschappers snappen steeds meer van de oorzaak én werken aan een mogelijke behandeling. Drie methoden onder de loep.   • Met een klemmetje en een koptelefoon van het gekmakende oorsuizen af. Neurowetenschap — Tinnitus kan gekmakend zijn. Is het te verhelpen? Twee wetenschappers proberen het door met een klemmetje en een koptelefoon een zenuw te stimuleren.   • Technologie waar je stil van wordt: een apparaat tegen tinnitus. Wouter Serdijn is gefascineerd door hoe elektrisch ons lichaam is en hoe je met elektriciteit de interactie met ons lichaam kunt aangaan om zo mensen beter te maken. Het hart, het gehoor, spiercellen, organen, noem het maar op en hij heeft er bio-elektronische medicijnen voor helpen ontwikkelen. Al tien jaar richt hij zijn aandacht specifiek op het zenuwstelsel waar zich, helaas, veel aandoeningen manifesteren die ook nog eens buiten het bereik van gewone medicijnen blijken te liggen. Bij tinnitus hoopt en verwacht hij met neurostimulatie de hersenen een zetje de goede kant op te kunnen geven.   • Mogelijke oplossing voor tinnitus. Het is is een groot probleem waar veel mensen in ons land mee moeten leven: tinnitus, oftewel oorsuizen. Maar er gloort een beetje hoop.   • Leven met een piep. Suizende oren door tinnitus. Het is de week van het oorsuizen. Hoe is het om met oorsuizen, ook bekend als tinnitus, door het leven te gaan? En hoe proberen onderzoekers de klachten van mensen met ernstige tinnitus te verminderen?   • Oorzaken, ervaringen en een oplossing? ‘Kwestie van geluid’ over tinnitus. Hoogleraar bio-elektronica Wouter Serdijn vertelt over zijn onderzoek naar een nieuwe behandelmethode die misschien wel dé oplossing gaat zijn: ‘fysiotherapie voor het brein’, noemt hij het zelf.   • Elektrotechnisch ingenieur en neurochirurg denken oplossing voor tinnitus gevonden te hebben. Je hebt ’t zo te pakken: tinnitus, ofwel een snerpende piep in je oren. Meestal verdwijnt-ie, maar wat als het gepiep blijft?   • Een constante piep of ruis in je oren – om gek van te worden. Toch is er geen genezing voor mensen met tinnitus. Nog niet, want elektrotechnisch ingenieur Wouter Serdijn (TU Delft) laat het er niet bij zitten. Hij werkt aan een apparaatje dat tinnitus moet verhelpen. Hoe?   • Doorbraak in de bio-elektronica. Zweedse wetenschappers in de bio-elektronica hebben een doorbraak bereikt. Ze hebben een gel ontwikkeld die in het lichaam transformeert tot een elektrode. Interview van Astrid Kersseboom met Wouter Serdijn, hoogleraar bio-elektronica aan de TU Delft, op het NOS Radio 1 Journaal, d. 24 februari 2023.

  • Elektroden gegroeid in levende dieren. Wetenschappers hebben een geleidende gel laten ontstaan in onder meer het hart en de hersenen van zebravissen. Er zijn nog wel veel wetenschappelijke vragen, maar als daar goede antwoorden op komen, dan liggen er mooie toepassingen voor medische implantaten het verschiet, zo denkt bio-elektronica-onderzoeker Wouter Serdijn van de TU Delft. “Met deze nieuwe technologie zou het mogelijk zijn om elektroden op moeilijk (chirurgisch) bereikbare te laten groeien en deze te verbinden met makkelijker bereikbare plekken.   • Netwerkmarketing, listig maar legaal: ‘We worden belazerd met al die beloftes’. Healy belooft iedereen een 'gezond, voldaan en bewust leven' met frequentietherapie. Maar in werkelijkheid gaat achter het apparaatje een schimmige verkoopconstructie schuil waarbij de bedrijfstop mogelijk miljoenen verdient ten koste van duizenden kwetsbare Nederlanders. “De Healy weet niks en meet niks.   • Piepen, brommen, suizen. Het ongemak van tinnitus. Een paar jaar geleden sloot de groep Bio-elektronica van de TU Delft (faculteit Elektrotechniek, Wiskunde en Informatica) zich aan bij een internationaal onderzoek naar oorsuizen onder de naam Tinnitus House.   • Altijd geld bij de hand, met een betaalchip onder je huid. In de onstuitbare opmars van het contactloos betalen zet een Pools bedrijf de volgende stap: een betaalchip onder de huid, geen apparaat meer nodig. Wie wil dat? Brigitte heeft er al een.   • ABN Amro claimt de eerste bank ter wereld te zijn die het mogelijk maakt om met een ring te betalen in plaats van met een pinpas. De bank experimenteert daar momenteel mee met een selecte groep van klanten. Hoeveel mensen met de ring willen betalen, is nog maar de vraag.
