[2023] Data reduction by mixed-signal processing of ultrasound echo signals for wearable ultrasound devices

  • Making ultrasound imaging available in a wearable form-factor will open up many new applications, such as home-monitoring of cardiac patients. One of the key challenges of wearable ultrasound devices is that they should communicate their measurement data wirelessly, while the raw data received during ultrasound imaging readily exceeds what can be realistically transmitted across a low-power wireless link. Therefore, data reduction in the probe is essential.
  • In this project, you will investigate power-efficient circuit implementations of data-reduction schemes. This may include analog or mixed-signal beamforming, which is a proven way of data reduction in ultrasound imaging systems, but also alternative data reduction schemes will be considred.
  • The project includes the design, tape-out and measurement of a prototype chip.
