MSc thesis project proposal

[2021] Energy Harvesting and Power Management in the Same DC-DC Converter Area

Project outside the university

NOWI

Most applications powered by energy harvesting require power management circuits to provide a clean supply voltage. However, this requires an additional DC-DC converter and control circuits, which take a large area of the chip and require additional external components. A way of overcoming this problem would be to combine both DC-DC converters into a single one.

Assignment

Research a way of combining the energy harvesting and power management (voltage regulating) DC-DC converters in a single design. For instance, time sharing of the DC-DC converter could be used to switch perform both tasks. The challenge will be to find a way to avoid the reduction of power conversion efficiency while maintaining the operating power range.

Requirements

You are an MSc student in Electrical Engineering, in the Microelectronics track, and in the Analog or Biomedical Electronics profile. You have received at least a 7.5 for Analog Integrated Circuit Design (ET4252). Preferably you have also taken Introduction to power conversion technology (ET4382).
